delegao.moe is back!

Hello,

This is a post after four (yes, 4!) long years of radio silence... Many things have happened in the meantime, as you can imagine.

The purpose of this post is to let you know that I am still alive, and I am doing my best to keep my services up and running for the time being. While there have been hiccups here and there (this website is a prime example, with a TLS error that left the site unavailable for a few months due to HSTS...), data integrity has always been of utmost importance, and my longest-running service (safe.delegao.moe) is still serving its first uploaded file.

My ultimate goal is to consolidate everything into a reasonably "auto-pilot" state, where services will self-heal and require minimal human interaction from my side, as my free time has decreased to a minimum. To sum it all up, here's my to-do list:

  • Bring delegao.moe back online ✔️ [06 nov 2024]
  • Host most (if not all) of my services on premises
    • I am slowly moving back to self-hosting. I have a decent amount of unused hardware that I’d like to put to good use. It's also cheaper in the long run.
    • delegao.moe is already served from es-armhf-aurora, which is an Orange Pi Zero host featuring a quad-core Cortex A7 SoC (nothing to brag about, it’s quite old, but as you can see, still does the job)
  • Rewrite delegao.moe or use a different blogging system
    • I’d say my programming skills have improved (at least a little), so I’m confident in rewriting this script using PDO or some PHP framework. I might even venture into writing it in a different programming language (other than PHP), but that’s a different story.
    • Even if the above is true, there are already plenty of well-written and well-supported blogging systems, so I think it’s better to contribute to them rather than creating yet another general-purpose blogging script.
  • Cut down on hosting costs
    • Related to the second point, inflation and faster home internet speeds have made rental servers less appealing. This is why I want to keep recurring costs to a minimum and bring self-hosting back to its prime, while using external services only as gateways and reverse proxies.
  • Organize myself and consolidate my services
    • I seriously need to sit down and pay attention to each of my freely available services in order to establish proper maintenance guidelines or decide whether to keep them running. Some might continue, others might not.
    • I’d also like to create a single page displaying all my services and their current status (to avoid outages or poor performance), and ideally federate them with a common login.

This should sum up all the ideas I have in my head right now. I will get to them eventually — in less than four years, I promise!

Until next time, keep waddling! Rubén
